Navassa Mayor calls newspaper article “a lie”

NAVASSA, NC (WWAY)– The city of Navassa has faced criticism in recent months for its handling of the city’s finances, but now a new issue has come to light.

Our partners at the Local News Review published an article Thursday saying Navassa Mayor Eulis Willis signed a contract with Shalimar Construction, in which the city would pay for 14 private sewer taps on private property.

The newspaper article says Willis owns four of the 14 properties where new sewer taps would be installed, with a total cost of nearly $55,000.

If this is true, it would mean public funds are paying for private sewer projects. During a regular council meeting tonight, the mayor responded to the article.

“For the media putting me on the front paging, having approved something, it’s a lie. Ok i want that to be pretty much well understood,” Willis said.

The mayor refused to comment on camera. He did say off camera that he does not have the authority to approve any spending of city money. Willis said the board approved to spend the nearly $55,000 to construct sewage piping and taps for the 14 lots.

Also at Thursday’s meeting, the council voted to approve a hiring freeze until further notice. Council members recessed and will continue their regular agenda meeting next Thursday at 6:30 pm.
