NC governor to call Legislature back Jan. 4

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Gov. Beverly Perdue will tell the North Carolina Legislature to return to Raleigh early next month to consider her veto of a bill to do away with a 2009 law that addressed racial bias in the death penalty.

Perdue’s office said Monday she’ll call lawmakers back Jan. 4 to consider her veto of a bill that would have essentially repealed the Racial Justice Act. The Legislature will have to decide whether to attempt to override the veto or let it stand.

The 2009 law creates a new method for death-row inmates to allege racial discrimination and seek life in prison without parole.

The state constitution required Perdue to return legislators by Jan. 8, or the veto would have been canceled.
