K-9 helps catch man after shots fired in Hillcrest
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A man is in custody after reports of shots fired in the Hillcrest community in Wilmington.
Wilmington Police say a K-9 officer at the intersection of 13th and Dawson Streets heard gunfire from inside the housing project. He notified other WPD officers, and they converged on the area.
The K-9 officer got out to question three people. Two followed the officer’s instructions to get down on the ground, but the third person, who was in his car, got out of the car and tried to walk away.
Police say Ronald Leon Davis, 49, of Wilmington, refused officers’ commands. Police say he reached toward his waist. That’s when the K-9 officer released his dog and Davis was arrested.
Officers saw a shotgun in the back seat of Davis’s car and found spent shells at the rear of the car.
Davis was taken to the hospital for treatment of a dog bite he suffered during his arrest. After treatment, he will go to the New Hanover County Jail and be charged with discharging a firearm in the city limits, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and resist/delay/obstruct a public officer.
