Kwanzaa begins tonight
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A day after Christmas and on the next to last night of Chanukah, another holiday is just getting started.
This is the first night of Kwanzaa. It is a weeklong celebration of African culture, heritage and ancestry.
Each year millions of African-Americans gather and reflect on the past year and refocus themselves on the seven African principles of unity, self-determination, responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.
A community celebration will be held tonight at the Burnett-Eaton Museum.
“This is the fifth annual Kwanzaa celebration, and we’re looking for a good turnout tonight of a mix audience,” museum founder Islah Spellar said. “We want grandparents, mothers, and fathers, people of all nationalities are welcomed to participate and celebrate Kwanzaa.”
The celebration at the Burnett-Eaton Museum at 410 North 7th Street starts at 6:30 p.m. and runs until 7:30.
