Wilmington celebrates Kwanzaa
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Monday night was the first night of Kwanzaa. The seven day celebration of African culture, heritage and ancestry was observed at the Burnett-Eaton museum.
Each year millions of African-Americans gather and reflect on the past year and refocus themselves on the seven African principles. Monday nights focus was unity, speakers engaged the crowed in an interactive discussion, and Tuesday night is self-determination followed by responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.
Damiyr Speller offered the prayer for Monday night’s event, “To me personally it means coming together, bringing the community together and teaching and learning about our culture.”
The Kwanzaa celebration at the Burnett-Eaton museum at 410 north Seventh Street starts at 6:30 each night and runs until 7:30.
Everyone is welcome
