NC residents wary of railroad expansion project

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — A planned railroad improvement project has dozens of businesses and residents in southern Rowan County worried about where they’ll be left once it’s complete.

The Salisbury Post reports that 59 businesses and 28 residences could be affected by plans to build 11 miles of new track on the North Carolina Railroad between Salisbury and Kannapolis.

Officials say not all of those affected will have to move. But some, like Brothers Tire Sales in Kannapolis, are so close to the railroad corridor they anticipate either moving or having to shut down.

Business owners say much of their uncertainty stems from not knowing how much they’ll be compensated for their property.

Department of Transportation spokeswoman Greer Beaty says the agency wants to compensate people fairly.

Plans should be finalized by March.
