Fire guts historic NC mansion, 5 hospitalized

LEGGETT, NC (AP) — A rural North Carolina mansion is a smoking ruin and five people are recovering from injuries after a blaze gutted the home.

Fire officials say 12 people were staying at what is known as the Arthur Fountain House, near the Edgecombe County town of Leggett. Five adults were sent to the Jaycee Burn Center in Chapel Hill after the early-morning fire Monday. None of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

County Fire Marshal Butch Beach says the homeowner believes smoke detectors saved their lives.

The columned three-story house was built in 1918 on a family farm of 700 acres. Preservation North Carolina called it one of the state’s best Classical Revival mansions.
