Fatal car crash involving deputy; MLK closed
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — One man is dead and another is in the hospital after a head on collision involving a New Hanover County Sheriff’s deputy early Friday morning on Martin Luther King Jr. Highway.
The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy who was patrolling the area was hit by a drunk driver who crossed over the median and drove the wrong way down MLK just before 1:30am. The highway is closed to all traffic in both directions due to the crash.
Investigators say the driver of the car was pronounced dead on the scene. The Sheriff’s deputy was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center by ambulance. His condition is unknown at this time. New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Jerry Brewer says the names of both drivers will not be released until family members are notified of the accident.
