Murder suspect arrested; may have hidden gun in rectum
ONSLOW COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — A man pulled over by a state trooper in Onslow County this week turned out to be wanted for murder in Georgia. And he may have hidden a gun in a very unusual place.
Investigators say Tpr. Scott Merritt arrested Michael Leon Ward, 22, Monday for impaired driving and other offenses. Merritt brought Ward to the Onslow County Detention Center, where Ward was strip searched before being booked in. Investigators say during the arrest and booking process, Ward used another person’s identity.
Tuesday detention officers found a handgun in Ward’s jail cell. After that detectives figured out who Ward really was. A check through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) revealed that Ward was entered by the Atlanta Police Department for a homicide back in October.
Investigators with the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office are assisting the Atlanta Police Department with their investigation.
Ward is being held in the Onslow County Detention Center without bond pending extradition to Georgia on the murder charge.
Today, Ward was taken to the hospital for possible injuries that may have occurred to his rectum, where it is believed Ward may have concealed the .38 caliber, six-inch barrel revolver. The gun was not loaded. However, the gun was test fired by the OCSO CSI to determine its functionality and it was in operational condition.
