Fishermen of all ages catch fun at Striper Tournament

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Fishermen and women braved the cold Saturday morning to catch some fun and some Stripe Bass at the 4th annual Cape Fear River Watch Striper Tournament.

It’s a tag-and-release competition that will benefit our river, our environment and our economy. The tagged fish will be monitored for the next several years.

“From putting the tags in these fish, we are going to track their movements for the next three years as well as use that data for stock assessment and to make sure that they are able to swim over lock and dam number one since we inserted the new rock weir system,” Cape Fear River Watch Communication Coordinator Jen Cole said.

A rock weir is also called a fish ladder and helps fish swim around dams, something necessary for Stripe Bass because they live in the ocean but come to spawn in the river. Cape Fear River Watch hopes the Striper population will grow and in turn, that our economy will grow.

The event also includes free educational activities for kids of all ages Saturday until 3 p.m. at the Coastline Convention Center.
