Crowds turn out for annual MLK Day Parade in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — People of all races and ages joined together to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. in Wilmington at the annual parade in his honor.

Before the parade, a group of people led by Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous prayed together for the unity of our city.

The parade made its way up Castle Street at noon. It was full of elected officials, bands, fire trucks, community groups and businesses.

Organizer Hollis Briggs said he’s proud of the progress society has made and thinks Dr. King would be, too.

“I think he’d be extremely excited right now, because, I think, believe it or not, I think the economy is actually drawing people closer together, because we all really need each other right now,” Briggs said.

Briggs said teaching our youth about influential people like king is so important, because if we don’t know where we came from, we surely won’t know where we are going.

“I’d say thank you (to Dr. King) for bringing white people and black people together,” parade spectator Brandon Munn said.
