Diligence commander reacts to Italian cruise ship disaster
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As the search for missing people continues in Italy after a cruise ship ran aground, people are looking for someone to blame.
The captain of the Costa Concordia, Francesco Schettino, is being blamed for the disaster after he abandoned ship.
The commander of the Coast Guard Cutter Diligence says he would not have handled the situation in the same way.
“The situation in Italy truly is a tragedy,” Cmdr. Douglas Goodwin said. “I wasn’t there, and I wouldn’t speak to the actions of another captain. I just know from my standpoint that navigation and the safety of the people that are entrusted to is absolutely critical.”
Cmdr. Goodwin says he was very sad to hear about the situation in Italy and cannot imagine going through a something like that. He says he is praying for everyone involved with the disaster.
