Judges to weigh request to delay NC primary

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Three judges will decide whether those who sued over Republican-drawn boundaries for legislative and congressional districts are likely enough to win their case that North Carolina’s primary should be delayed for two months.

The panel of Superior Court judges scheduled a Friday morning hearing to hear arguments over a proposed injunction blocking the use of redistricting maps for now.

Democratic elected officials and civil rights and election watchdog groups argue the plans are unconstitutional because of racial gerrymandering and boundaries that cross too many county lines. They want the May 8 primary postponed until July 10.

Legislative leaders and lawyers for the state say the boundaries are lawful and a preliminary injunction isn’t needed.

Candidate filing is scheduled to begin in less than four weeks.
