NC school choice advocates celebrate good year

GREENSBORO, NC (AP) — A former Durham community activist who later became school superintendent in Wisconsin’s largest city is praising new North Carolina laws favoring school choice.

The group Parents for Educational Freedom celebrates a successful year with Howard Fuller at an event Tuesday at the International Civil Rights Center in Greensboro.

Fuller was a civil rights worker during the 1960s who helped keep Durham relatively peaceful after Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. He helped establish the now-defunct Malcolm X University in the `60s. He moved to Wisconsin and became superintendent of the Milwaukee public schools in the 1990s.

State lawmakers last year eliminated a 100-school cap on public charter schools and for the first time subsidized private education by creating a tax credit for parents who send their disabled children to private schools.
