HAPPENING NOW: Commissioner Berger no-show for court hearing; Deputies bring him into courthouse in cuffs
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – New Hanover County Sheriff’s Deputies had to roust Commissioner Brian Berger and take him to court this morning. When he arrived, he was in handcuffs.
He was supposed to there at 9:30 a.m. for a hearing related to him violating a protective order filed by his ex-girlfriend but never showed.
Deputies say Berger was sorry they had to come and get him and was cooperative.
Commissioner Jonathan Barfield says he’s been subpoenaed to testify today. Berger’s ex-girlfriend Heath Blaylock was in court this morning as well.
Berger has been consistantly late to meetings since taking office, even missing voting on a motion to remove him from the boards he sits on.
Last year, the four other commissioners asked Berger to resign. He’s refused, saying they’re out to get him because he has different political views.
