BBQ masters cook up meat with a mission
CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Whether you like it smoky, sweet, saucy or savory, there’s no denying barbecue is a southern favorite.
The best barbecuers around fired up their grills and smokers and busted out secret recipes to compete in the inaugural Step Up for Soldiers Backyard BBQ Cook-Off Saturday.
Twenty-five teams stepped up to the plate to help raise money for the organization that exists to help wounded and disabled veterans. Grill master Ken Badoian says he’s happy to compete but is even more excited about the mission behind the meat.
“I think it’s really important to support the guys serving now,” competitor Ken Badoian said. “We came home from Vietnam, and we weren’t as welcomed. These guys now really deserve the credit.”
Badoian was part of the Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church team.
