NAACP leader says country’s eyes are on NC

DURHAM, NC (AP) — The national leader of the NAACP says the eyes of the whole country are on North Carolina politics this year.

Benjamin Todd Jealous was in Durham Saturday to announce plans for the sixth annual “Historic Thousands on Jones Street” march and rally in February. The annual event brings together dozens of left-leaning and civil rights groups from across North Carolina.

This year, one of the major goals of the event is to galvanize opposition to a proposed constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

The Rev. William Barber, leader of the state NAACP chapter, says the amendment would institutionalize discrimination. But Kevin Daniels, president of the state branch of the conservative Frederick Douglass Foundation, says the NAACP is out of step with most black voters on the issue.
