FIRST ON 3: Boseman files for joint custody of second ex-partner’s son

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — For a second time, former state Sen. Julia Boseman is suing an ex-partner for joint custody of the other woman’s child.

Boseman filed a complaint for child custody in Brunswick County yesterday against Chrystal Medlin. Medlin gave birth two years ago to a baby boy, and Boseman, who argues she also serves as the child’s parent, says she deserves parental rights despite the end of the relationship between the two women.

Medlin has not yet returned a call for comment.

In her filing, Boseman argues that Medlin publicly herself and Boseman out as the child’s parents, encouraged a parent-child relationship between Boseman and the boy and “voluntarily relinquished her paramount parental right to make decisions regarding the minor child by voluntarily ‘sharing decision-making’ authority with” Boseman.

This is not new territory for Boseman. In 2005 she tried to adopt the child she raised with former partner Melissa Jarrell. In that case, Jarrell is also the child’s biological mother. That case went all the way to the North Carolina Supreme Court, where in a 5-2 decision justices overturned a lower court ruling to allow Boseman’s request to adopt Jarrell’s son while waiving a requirement that Jarrell would have to give up her parental rights in the process, because state law does not allow same-sex adoption.

The high court, though, did let stand another lower court ruling allowing the two to have joint custody of the child.
