Bowles weighing bid for NC governor

By GARY D. ROBERTSON
Associated Press

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — Erskine Bowles served as chief of staff in Bill Clinton’s White House, led the University of North Carolina system and co-chaired a national bipartisan commission that recommended tough choices to close the budget deficit.

Now the investment banker is considering whether to get into the governor’s race in his home state of North Carolina after fellow Democrat and incumbent Bev Perdue said last week she would not seek re-election.

Bowles did not return a phone call or e-mail seeking comment Wednesday, but he’s been talking to fellow Democrats.

Two other Democrats already want to succeed Perdue.

Former Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory is the likely Republican nominee.

The governor’s race could have implications for an important swing state in the presidential election and the site of the Democratic convention.
