NC Catholics say play insults the Virgin Mary

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — Charlotte Roman Catholics led by Bishop Peter Jugis are protesting the production of a play they say is insulting to the Virgin Mary.

The Charlotte Observer reports about 80 people gathered in front of the theater Thursday at a prayer vigil to protest the production of “The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told.”

Jugis sent a letter last month to the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center saying the play implies that the Virgin Mary was a lesbian.

The Queen City Theatre Company is staging the production and says that’s a misreading of the comedy, which runs through Feb. 18.

Charlotte diocese spokesman David Hains says Catholics will continue holding vigils in chapels and homes each night the play is in town.
