US Forest Service schedules burn on NC mountain

PISGAH FOREST, NC (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service plans to begin a 1,200-acre prescribed burn in the Bearpen Mountain area in of the Pisgah Ranger District in the Pisgah National Forest.

The service says the burn will begin Friday and will take two to three days to complete. The burn will reduce woody debris, which will help prevent wildfires while also improving wildlife habitat.

Area trails and roads are closed during a prescribed burn.

The southern end of the burn will be U.S. Highway 276 at the intersection of Avery Creek Road, extending to the intersection of Coontree Loop Trail and the highway. The northern portion of the burn is Coontree Gap. The burn area will be contained by Avery Creek, Highway 276, and Coontree Loop and Bennett Gap trails.
