Loose logs block US-17 causing severe traffic

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Traffic backed up for miles Wednesday night after a truck carrying timber flipped near Supply Street on US-17, blocking the Northbound lanes and spilling the wood across the Southbound lanes.

Highway Patrol says the truck driver was attempting to avoid hitting a white van that cut the truck off. They say when the truck swerved to avoid the van, the driver lost control, over corrected and flipped. Investigators say the driver was taken to Brunswick County Novant Medical Center with non life threatening injuries and is in stable condition.

Troopers re-routed traffic while Sheriff’s Deputies and Emergency Services flipped the truck back onto its wheels and cleared the street. Investigators say a business located near the site of the accident had heavy equiptment available so they were able to quickly clear the loose logs from the highway.

Highway Patrol says the person they believe to have caused the accident, the driver of the white van, left the scene before authorities arrived. Luckily, no other vehicles were involved in the accident that troopers say could have been much worse.

Investigators are asking anyone with information on the white van involved in the accident to call their office at 910-395-3917.
