FIRST ON 3: Leland hires interim chief, upholds Jayne firing
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Leland has hired a new interim police chief. The town manager has also upheld the termination of former chief Tim Jayne, who had appealed.
Town Manager David Hollis today announced that Lloyd Michael James Jr. will take over as interim chief until a permanent replacement is found. With James joining the department, Karl Smith, who had been serving as interim chief, will return to his duties as deputy chief.
“I look forward to Mr. James working with the Town of Leland during this critical period of transition with the police department and as we continue with the search and selection process for a permanent chief of police,” Hollis said in a statement. “While I do not have a specific time frame before a permanent chief of police is hired, I expect the process to take several months. Mr. James’s leadership and service within the department will allow us to have adequate time to complete this process diligently and thoroughly.”
