Extinct bird lives on at NC Museum of Forestry

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — An extinct bird came home to roost at the North Carolina Museum of Forestry this weekend.

A print of James Audubon’s “Carolina Parrot” is now on display at the museum in Whiteville.

The colorful bird was the only parrot species native to the eastern United States. It was determined extinct in 1939.

The new display has special significance to the people who run the museum.

“This is just part of the Forestry Museum’s rebirth,” museum director Harry Warren said. “We underwent a major renovation that concluded late in 2011, and this is part of the new North Carolina Museum of Forestry.”

The “Carolina Parrot” print is now part of the museum’s permanent collection.
