Family still waiting for details on UNCW student’s death

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New details about a UNCW student found dead in his apartment last week. Although we still do not know exactly what killed freshman Bryce Scott, we have new details on how he was found.

A call to New Hanover County Dispatch Friday morning came from a father looking for answers. Wallace Scott called to report his son Bryce missing just a day before the UNCW student’s 19th birthday.

“The last we heard from him was Wednesday night,” Scott told the operator. “My ex-wife has been trying to reach him non-stop since that point, but we talked to people that are in his fraternity, and he didn’t show up to a function Wednesday night. No one’s been in touch with him.”

Scott made the call while driving from Cary to check on his son.

Before Scott arrived at the Reserves at Forest Hills, a maintenance worker found Bryce dead. Dispatch notes say Bryce was cold and not breathing, half on the couch and half on the floor. First responders say there was a bong on the floor.

We talked to Wallace Scott by phone Thursday. He says his family is distraught by the loss of his son. He says Bryce was a good kid who made some poor choices in his life.

Scott says the family is still waiting to find out exactly how Bryce died. He says police told him it could be months before they know all the details.

A medical examiner told WWAY today toxicology tests could take six to eight weeks.
