Santorum, McCrory, Etheridge lead NC polling

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Mitt Romney made still be the front runner in the Republican race for president, but a new poll shows he’s not the leader in North Carolina.

Public Policy Polling found 31 percent of Republican voters in the state would pick Rick Santorum in the presidential primary. Romney is second with 25 percent, followed closely by Newt Gingrich either 23 percent. That duo led Santorum by 10 points a month ago. Ron Paul has just eight-percent support.

Meanwhile those same voters overwhelmingly support Pat McCrory despite a crowded Republican field for governor. The former Charlotte mayor is polling at 57 percent. No other candidate in the race got more than three percent in the PPP survey. Thirty-five percent of Republicans say they are still undecided on the gubernatorial primary.

Things are a little less clear in the Democratic primary. Former US Rep. Bob Etheridge is the front-runner according to PPP with 26 percent. Walter Dalton is second with 19 percent. Ninety-year-old doctor Bruce Blackmon is the only other candidate with as much as five percent. Forty-one percent of Democratic voters say they are still undecided.
