FIRST ON 3: Lambeth dropping out of House race because of health issues

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — There will not be a Republican primary for the 19th District state House seat after all. Kure Beach Mayor Dean Lambeth says he is dropping out of the race because of health reasons.

Lambeth and New Hanover County Commission Chair Ted Davis, both Republicans, filed to run for the seat last week after Rep. Danny McComas said he would not seek another term.

Lambeth told WWAY this morning he suffered a slight stroke last week and suffers from other complications from his diabetes. As a result, he said he is under “doctor’s orders not to proceed.” Lambeth also said he needs to finish the business he promised the voters of Kure Beach.

Lambeth dropping out means Davis will automatically move on to November’s general election. He will face Kure Beach Commissioner Emile Swearingen, a Democrat.

Lambeth plans to hold a news conference at 3 p.m. at Kure Beach Town Hall to discuss his decision.
