Investigation continues into child’s death, chase

SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) — The investigation continues into the suspicious death of a three-year-old boy in Brunswick County. The little boy was dropped off at Brunswick Novant Hospital yesterday where he lost his fight for life. Now police in Shallotte are looking for answers.

“Any time you’re dealing with a three-year-old it’s very critical, and it’s very emotional, and right now our prayers go out to the family,” Shallotte Police Chief Rodney Gause said.

Investigators say Montey Murray dropped off a three-year-old boy at Brunswick Novant Thursday morning. When Murray left investigators went looking for answers.

Murray had returned to his girlfriend’s apartment in Shallotte. When police tried to question him, he took off in his SUV starting a chase that ended when deputies rammed the car on US-17.

Murray is now in the Brunswick County Jail under $1 million bond charged with fleeing to elude and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with his vehicle.

This is not Murray’s first brush with the law. He has convictions going back at least to 2001, including robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault, communicating threats, possesion and speeding to elude arrest.

So what does that have to do with the death of a three-year-old boy? For now, no one is charged in connection to the death, but Shallotte Police and the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office are committed to the investigation.

“We still have a lot of people we need to talk to and a lot of people we need to interview,” Gause said. “That’s why the officers you see around are out all night long last night, early hours this morning and all day today. And all weekend long this weekend.”

For now police are waiting for the results of the autopsy to tell them why the little boy died. Their investigation continues.
