Wilmington chef selected as nominee for Food & Wine’s ‘The People’s Best New Chef 2012’

WILMINGTON, NC (NEWS RELEASE) — Cameo 19 Hundred announced FOOD & WINE has selected Chef Kirsten Mitchell as a nominee for The People’s Best New Chef. The award, an extension of the FOOD & WINE Best New Chefs program, honors talented up-and-coming innovators who have run their own kitchens for five years or fewer. The dining public will determine The People’s Best New Chef winner via online vote on www.foodandwine.com/peoples-bnc, beginning today and continuing through March 11.

“I am thrilled to be selected by FOOD & WINE for this award,” said Mitchell. “It’s a great honor to be nominated for something that I love to do. I work with an amazing team at Cameo 19 Hundred, where I have the freedom to express my creativity. I want to thank the community for supporting me and the restaurant.”

Mitchell, 27, started her career in the kitchen at an early age. She learned the art of cooking from her parents, who owned Morel’s in Banner Elk, a renowned French Bistro in the mountains of North Carolina. As a teen, Mitchell worked alongside her father, who was also recognized by FOOD & WINE as one of the top 50 American chefs in the mid-1980s. In 2010, Brian Parke, the owner of Cameo 19 Hundred, recognized Mitchell’s talent and hired her to lead the kitchen. Mitchell has made her mark in Wilmington. In 2011, Mitchell was voted as one of the top chef’s in Wilmington by readers of the Star News.

“We are so proud of Kirsten,” said Parke. “This honor is a testament to her talent and her hard work. She is an outstanding and professional chef. Our focus is to offer our clients a unique dining experience with fresh and innovative dishes and Kirsten does a phenomenal job of executing the mission of Cameo 19 Hundred.”

The field of 100 nominees for The People’s Best New Chef℠ award includes 10 chefs in each of 10 regions across America. Mitchell has been selected to represent the southeast. The chefs with the most votes in each of the regions will be named finalists. Of those 10 finalists, the one with the most votes overall will be named The People’s Best New Chef. The People’s Best New Chef finalists and winner will be revealed on March 12; the winner will also be featured in July 2012 issue of FOOD & WINE, the same issue that profiles the Best New Chefs. (Note: Nominees for The People’s Best New Chef award remain eligible for a Best New Chef award.)

“After last year’s successful debut, we’re thrilled to again give the dining public a chance to help their favorite chef become The People’s Best New Chef,” says FOOD & WINE Editor in Chief Dana Cowin.
