Allergy season hits Cape Fear with full force

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Flowers are blooming, and the pollen is here. The official start of spring is still a week away, but some of us are already suffering with springtime allergies, and it could get worse.

“My eyes have been really burning and running like weeping,” allergy sufferer Bronwyn White said.

Allergists say the warmer temperatures have triggered the early pollination of trees around the Cape Fear.

“We start with a spring pollen, which are tree pollens, and then we run into the grass pollens in your late spring, summer,” allergist Dr. Alex Yip said. “And then late summer, we run into the ragweed and fall-time pollen, so it’s a long pollen season in Wilmington in general.”

Dr. Yip says allergies can be severe, but there are some simple tricks to fight the pollen. He suggests showering after you come inside from outdoor activities, taking allergy medications and keeping your windows closed during high pollen days.

“It’s hard, because the house gets so warm, and at night you wanna open the windows, because it’s so cool. Cool off the house, but then all the pollen comes in,” White said.

Dr. Yip says you don’t have to miss the warmer weather and suffer all spring.

“A lot of people sort of resign themselves to being miserable throughout the spring, ‘Oh, here’s the spring pollen season. I’m going to be sneezing and itching and having runny, drippy nose all spring long, but I’ll get over it.’ But I think the important thing to realize is that there are a lot of treatments out there that are very successful, well tolerated, and make their springtime not so miserable,” Dr. Yip said.

He says dry, windy days are usually the worst. He says check out pollen forecasts to find out how severe the pollen is from day to day. You can wind one each morning and evening during StormTrack3 Weather on WWAY NewsChannel 3.
