New Hanover Health Dept. looking at other ways to use rejected grant money

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — After all five New Hanover County Commissioners voted against a grant to fund contraceptives for women yesterday, the New Hanover County Health Department is trying again.

Fifty-eight counties in the state are eligible for the family planning funding. The state offered New Hanover County nearly $9,000. The county has until May 31 to decide how to use it, but it’s ultimately up to commissioners to accept the money. The state encouraged the Health Department to use the money to provide or intrauterine devices, or IUDs.

After county commissioners unanimously voted to turn down the funding, the Health Department will re-evaluate how to use the money and re-pitch the idea to commissioners.

“As a management team, we’ll come back together as a health department and determine what else under that umbrella could we use this funding for that would be a benefit to the Health Department and community,” New Hanover County Personal Health Services Manager Carla Turner said.

The Health Department’s management team will meet within a week to brainstorm other uses for the funding.

We reached out to Commissioner Rick Catlin and Commission Chairman Ted Davis, who were both very vocal about rejecting the funding yesterday. Neither has returned our calls.
