Forum focuses on saving homeowners from foreclosure

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — Rep. Mike McIntyre says fighting foreclosure is one of the most pressing issues before us as a nation. Experts say cases are all to common in the Cape Fear as well.

Today McIntyre hosted a Foreclosure Prevention Forum in Brunswick County to try and tackle the problem head on.

“It’s been a nightmare for my wife and myself both,” said William Lynn, who’s facing foreclosure.

Home ownership is part of the American dream, but what if that dream started to crumble?

“We really didn’t think this could happen with all the supposedly transparent agencies looking after the consumer,” Lynn said.

Hundreds of homeowners are fighting foreclosure throughout the Cape Fear. Among those families are the Lynns. They’ve owned their home in Brunswick County since 1995, but for nearly the last three years they have been fighting foreclosure.

The lynns and others attended McIntyre’s Foreclosure Prevention Forum Monday.

“A lot of families are facing difficult times with the current economy, so we want to make sure they have every asset at their grasp in order to get help,” Rep. McIntyre said.

Among those assets are housing counselors and other experts, who took part in a panel discussion. They offered advice to homeowners on how to deal with servicers, lenders and the banks.

“It’s where you raise your family at. It’s where you live at. It’s where your life takes place, so fight for your home,” Brunswick Housing Opportunities President Resea Willis said.

A message of encouragement to families in a desperate situation.

“I was taught one important lesson today,” Lynn said. “Don’t give up.”

Among the advice from experts is if somebody is asking for money to modify your loan don’t do it. You should speak directly to a lender. You do not need a middle man to take care of your loan.
