Marines sorry for helicopter worries at NC town

KINSTON, NC (AP) — A commander at the Cherry Point Marine Air Corps Station is apologizing for training exercises involving low-flying helicopters that left many Kinston residents concerned about escaped inmates.

The Free Press of Kinston reports that Maj. Gen. Jon Davis apologized to the city council at its meeting this week for not informing local officials about the training exercises.

Earlier this month, unmarked helicopters hovered low above the town for several hours. Police and elected officials were flooded with calls from residents asking what was happening. Many people were worried an inmate was on the loose.

Davis says the Marines told the Kinston Regional JetPort about the exercises, but didn’t contact other officials. The commander of the 2nd Marine Air Wing at the base promises that will change in the future.
