School board member upset over loss of web domain

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County School Board member, Elizabeth Redenbaugh, no longer owns the website elizabethredenbaugh.com. Instead, the wife of a fellow school board member does.

Redenbaugh let the website expire. When she went to re-register it March 19, she discovered Catherine Fleming, the wife of school board member Derrick Hickey, was the new owner. Redenbaugh called Hickey and left a voicemail, telling him she wanted it released, and she wanted it released now.

Redenbaugh says she later ran into Hickey, who told her he was unaware his wife did that.

Fleming forwarded us an e-mail she sent to Redenbaugh.

“Let’s set the record straight. First, I purchased the domain name when you carelessly let it expire quite some time ago. Your disregard for your campaign is your problem, not mine. Use of this domain name that I have rightfully purchased is protected by my right to freedom of speech. As an attorney, you should know that. Furthermore, you will not intimidate or bully me. I listened to your voicemail message pertaining to the domain name, which I have included as an attachment to this message. If you have something to discuss with me, try something other than a raving message full of venomous castigations. As you threatened in your message, you have taken your personal complaints to the press. I think the “press” would be interested to know that you consider them your handmaid who will smear whomever upon your order. So, I’ve taken the liberty of copying them on this email since your relationship with the truth is so attenuated. Surely you can’t be trusted to convey the facts accurately.

“You shouldn’t be so shocked that a parent of school aged children in this community would endeavor to make sure that your record of misrepresentation is clear. After all, you have shown them nothing but contempt. During the 2008 campaign, you assured everyone that you supported neighborhood schools. People supported you because of that issue. Then you turned your back on them. But to celebrate this perfidy with that ridiculous award last year was just brazen.

“In sum, I anticipate using the domain name to make sure that your record is clear. Obviously, people who care about neighborhood schools will be most interested. However, it will also serve as a reminder to people who are on the other side of the issue that their champion is a careless solipsist who is more interested in collecting awards than advocating for the issues that they care about. Until now, your name has been synonymous with dissimulation. Now, it will also be synonymous with carelessness.”

Redenbaugh says she never received this email, but states that it is full of lies. She says when she ran for school board in 2008, she did not run on a neighborhood schools platform. Redenbaugh believes people assume she was for neighborhood schools because she was a registered Republican. In the fall, Redenbaugh switched political parties and is now a Democrat.

Redenbaugh says she thinks this tactic reflects poorly on Hickey and as members of the school board, we should be role models for students. She also compared this to bullying.
