School district says despite recent staff arrests, students safe at school
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — An Ashley High School teachers assistant is out of jail after being charged with indecent liberties with a 17-year-old girl. He’s the second TA at a New Hanover County High School charged with a crime against a student this month.
“We hate that this occurred. We hate whenever this occurs, but we’ll react very strongly to it, and quickly to make sure our students are safe,” said Dr. John Welmers, New Hanover Co. Schools Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources.
Dishon Tamere White, 26, turned himself into New Hanover County Sheriff’s detectives Tuesday night after being charged with taking indecent liberties with a 17-year-old girl, who investigators say is a student at Ashley High School.
White, who is a teachers assistant at Ashley, also helped start Wilmington’s first United Youth football team the Wilmington Bulldogs, according to Facebook.
Parents of students at Ashley say they are concerned about what happened.
“I’m sure this is not the first, and I’m sure it won’t be the last, unfortunately,” Leah Lyde said. “I think overall they’re doing a good job in handling the situation.”
New Hanover County Schools says that although this is the second incident involving a teachers assistant this month, they do not see it becoming a pattern.
“We understand the connection in time between these two events, but when you look at the big picture of 25,000 students and 4,000 employees and what goes on, our kids are safe at school, our students are safe in their buildings,” Dr. Welmers said.
Lyde, who has a child who had White as a teacher, says this incident and others like it make an impact on students.
“It’s still kind of a concern like, ‘Wow this is one of my teachers. This could really happen.’ It really hits home,” she said.
This is not the first incident of its kind at Ashley. Two years ago assistant soccer coach Brian Reardon was convicted of having sex with a student.
