NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (NEWS RELEASE) — Today, the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners named new county manager, selecting experienced Assistant County Manager Chris Coudriet to succeed Bruce Shell.

Coudriet brings to the position almost twenty years of public administration experience, with more than a decade as a county manager in North Carolina. He has a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from East Carolina University and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Coudriet and his wife, Leigh, have two children: Montgomery, daughter age 10, and Silas, a son age 8.

Coudriet has served as Assistant County Manager since he was hired in 2008, and oversees the following departments: Development Services, Engineering, Environmental Management, Fire Services, Health, Pretrial Release, Planning & Inspections, Social Services, Veteran Services, and Youth Empowerment Services.

Coudriet will become County Manager on June 30 with a salary of $155,000. He succeeds Bruce Shell, who in January announced his retirement effective June 30. Shell has been with the county for almost 25 years.

The county manager is the chief executive of New Hanover County, overseeing the operations of North Carolina’s second smallest county. New Hanover County’s government operates on a $262 million budget, serving more than 202,000 residents.
