Proposal unveiled to close NC Medicaid shortfall

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — It sounds like Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue’s administration and Republican legislative leaders have a plan to close an estimated $150 million shortfall in Medicaid expected by the end of June.

State officials discussed the outline of a proposal Wednesday in a General Assembly oversight committee.

State budget director Andy Willis said budgeted funds to pay medical providers will run out by the end of the month. He said the Department of Health and Human Services has found $45 million to pay those bills until the Legislature reconvenes in May.

Republicans sounded willing to make up the difference when they return to Raleigh by authorizing the use of other unspent funds. The dollars could come from one of several pots of money, including an estimated $145 million in extra revenue collections.
