ONLY ON 3: Fire destroys vacation home on Bald Head Island
BALD HEAD ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — Bald Head Island officials say a vacation home on the island was destroyed by a fire early this morning.
No one was in the 5 bedroom, 5 bathroom house (valued over $1.5 million) at the time. The owners, Peter and Linda Murphy, live in New Jersey.
“This call came out about 5:38 a.m. and it was from a loud noise and the sight of flames from across the marsh,” said Jerome Munna, Bald Head Island Chief of Public Safety. “The guys came out and when they did the fire was already through the roof and the house was fully involved.”
Right now, fire investigators think lightning from the storm that moved through last night might have started the fire, but they are still investigating.
“It is very rare that we have a fully involved structure fire,” said Munna. “As far as the response, it was fantastic. The way our systems laid out we arrive on most scenes within about 5 minutes.”
The U.S. Coast Guard also brought members of the Oak Island Fire Department to Bald Head Island to help contain the fire.
Firefighters say it is only the second major fire on Bald Head Island in the past two years.
The house is secluded and there was never any danger of catching other houses on fire.
