NC lawmakers would have say over Dix in proposal

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – Some North Carolina legislators believe the General Assembly should have some say on the future of 300 acres where a state mental hospital sits.

A legislative oversight committee voted Tuesday to recommend to colleagues a bill that would prevent the sale, lease or donation of land on the Dorothea Dix Hospital campus in Raleigh unless the Legislature gives prior approval. State health officials want to close in August a forensic unit at Dix with 30 beds, meaning there will no longer be patients there.

Gov. Beverly Perdue is among those who want to turn the land into an urban park. Other say proceeds from any sold land should benefit public mental health treatment.

The full Legislature could consider the bill when it reconvenes in May.
