Hatteras museum to show message from Titanic

HATTERAS, NC (AP) — The telegraph message that the Hatteras Weather Bureau Station received from the Titanic is going on public display for the first time at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras.

The message that reads “have struck iceberg” will go on display Saturday, the 100th anniversary of the sinking, and stay up through May 31. More than 1,500 people died on the Titanic.

The National Park Service says the Hatteras station received one of the first telegraph messages from the British passenger liner.

At 11:25 p.m., the message of, “C.Q.D.” meaning, “Come Quickly Distressed” was recorded by the station. That was the same time as the Cape Race Marconi Station in Newfoundland, Canada. Details followed with the ship’s coordinates and the reason for distress — “have struck iceberg.”
