UPDATE: Hampstead wildfire continues to spread
HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — Crews are battling a blaze near Hampstead after a property owner’s controlled burn got out of control.
According to NC Forest Service spokeswoman Laura Prevatte, the fire has burned nearly 500 acres and is still spreading. It started near the intersection of Hoover Road and Godfrey Creek Road in Hampstead.
Crews from Pender, New Hanover and Onslow Counties are helping control the fire. Prevatte said there is still a lot of work to do in order to secure the borders and put out the flames. Firefighters will likely be working into the night.
Officials have called in all their resources, including air tractors, air tankers, a helicopter and eight tractor plows, to help extinguish the fire before it poses any threat to people and structures.
No homes are in the path of the fire at this point, and no one has been asked to evacuate. The fire is heading away from homes and into the Holly Shelter Game Land.
The combination of gusty winds and very low humidity makes for a dangerous situation when it comes to fire. People are advised not to burn in these conditions.
