SBHS’s Aquaculture program wins award

Brunswick County, NC (WWAY) — A group at South Brunswick High School has received some high honor.

The aquaculture program at the school won the 2012 Sea World/Busch Gardens environmental excellence award. It was one of only three schools nationwide to be recognized.

The program will receive a $10,000 grant. The award will be used to buy classroom technology and program essentials such as bird netting, salt, algae paste, fish feed, rotifers, artemia, and dechlorinators.

One of the key components in the aquaculture program is students’ involvement with community service projects which include volunteering at local fishing tournaments. These opportunities provide students hands on experience with marine biologists and other individuals in the field. Students also serve as resident experts and help educate the public about the program and the importance of estuarine health.

Aquaculture students will get to travel to Sea World in Orlando later this summer to accept the award and get a behind the scenes tour of the park.
