ROTC student’s ceremonial rifle sparked school lockdown
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Three New Hanover County Schools are back open after a report of a person with a gun in the area prompted a lockdown for about an hour.
The school district said via Twitter that the lockdown was sparked by a ROTC student with a ceremonial rifle on campus. The district says students and staff were not in danger.
New Hanover County Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Jerry Brewer said Ashley High School, Murray Middle School and Anderson Elementary School were locked down because someone reported a person walking between the schools with a rifle.
