NC Dems deciding on chairman’s resignation

GREENSBORO, NC (AP) — The chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Party has turned in his resignation, but it’s unclear if party activists will accept it.

David Parker submitted his resignation to the State Executive Committee meeting Saturday in Greensboro. Hundreds of committee members were voting by ballot on whether to reject the resignation.

Gov. Beverly Perdue, Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton and others wanted Parker to step down because they said he was a distraction in the wake of sexual harassment allegations at party headquarters. Many allies of Parker don’t want him to leave.

Committee member Lloyd Scher of Mecklenburg County said Parker did nothing wrong in following the advice of the party’s attorney in settling the allegations confidentially.

At least three candidates are interested in succeeding Parker.
