Brothers start cross-country walk for charity at Wrightsville Beach
WRIGHTSVILLE EBACH, NC (WWAY) — In life there are trips, and then there are journeys. Two brothers are walking coast to coast in an effort to raise awareness and money for charity. Their journey started this morning in Wrightsville Beach.
“Total disbelief. I said, “you’re gonna do what?!?'” their mom Kathy Childs said about her reaction when she found out her sons’ news that they’ll travel all the way to California by foot.
The pair took off from Wrightsville Beach’s Harbor Inn Monday morning. Friends and family sent them off, but now they’re on their own.
“My biggest fear is where are we gonna stay tonight, because we don’t have it planned, because we don’t know how far we’re gonna be,” Caleb Childs said.
Despite fears the purpose behind their journey will keep them rolling.
“They chose three charities that are near and dear to their hearts,” Kathy said.
From a fund for wounded vets to educating people about cancer, the brothers talk to passers by about their efforts.
Now with backpacks and skate boards they’ll rely on the kindness of strangers.
“We’re hoping there’s good people in America that will give us their yard to camp out in or support by buying a meal or something,” Tanner Childs said.
“I’m not sure you can emotionally or physically prepare for a journey of this stature,” Caleb said.
But they can count on family and friends wishing them well.
With the Childs bothers on their way, the trip is expected to take four to six months. The total distance they’ll cover is about 3,000 miles.
