General Assembly session isn’t just about budget adjustments

Associated Press

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — The North Carolina General Assembly gets back to work Wednesday for its budget-adjustment session that also will likely include sensitive topics like gambling, annexation rules and fracking.

Republicans in charge of the Legislature will make changes to the second year of the two-year budget approved last year. But they have other issues to resolve before going home, probably in early July.

Lawmakers must change state gambling laws if an expanded gambling compact between Gov. Bev Perdue and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is to be carried out. They’ll also consider whether to change new involuntary annexation laws to respond to a court decision.

House and Senate Republicans also are trying to fashion a regulatory framework to permit a form of shale gas exploration in a couple of years.
