NC court: No new trial for man who killed 2 cops
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – A North Carolina appeals court has found that there’s no reason to order a new trial for a man convicted of killing two Charlotte police officers responding to a domestic dispute in 2007.
The state Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday that Demeatrius Montgomery was mentally competent to stand trial. The court’s opinion also said prosecutors didn’t stray from proper procedures by telling jurors that Montgomery was getting geared up to shoot the officers he saw arriving through his apartment window by listening to a song called “Murda Man.”
Montgomery was convicted in September 2010 of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to two consecutive life prison terms. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Officers Jeff Shelton and Sean Clark were shot in the head.
