Sailing movie star docks in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — If you’ve seen movies like “Pirates of the Caribbean,” you may recognize a ship docked along the Wilmington riverfront this weekend.

“The ship’s been kind of a movie star,” Capt. Robin Walbridge said. “In fact, that’s what I think of it: as a movie star.”

The replica of the HMS Bounty is no stranger to the spotlight. Multiple versions of “Mutiny on the Bounty” and other movies have featured the ship and its helm.

“It was taken off the ship put in the sound stage and used in every nautical movie from 1935 to 1962, so John Wayne, ‘Wake of the Red Riches,” stood at that helm,” Walbridge said. “John Heston, ‘Treasure Island,’ stood at that helm. And more recently Johnny Depp in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ 2 and 3. And for the younger audience, we were the opening six minutes of ‘Sponge Bob Square Pants.'”

Besides all of the Hollywood connections, Walbridge says the Bounty is rich with history.

“This is the space shuttle of 200 years ago,” Walbridge said. “This is how all the cargo got moved. This is how the rivers were worked. This is how the oceans were worked. I think it’s really important to bring the kids down and see how things actually worked 200 years ago.”

Interested people already lined Water Street waiting for tours. Young and old, the ship has many fans.

“I just think it’s interesting all the movies it’s been in, and I just wanted to come down and look at it,” Debra Elkins said.

If you are interested in touring the Bounty, it will be open for public tours tomorrow through sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
