Sea turtle eggs show up early along NC coast
WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) – Sea turtles nesting along the North Carolina coast have surprised volunteers and laid more than 1,000 eggs slightly more than two weeks into the nesting season.
The StarNews of Wilmington reports that Jim Boyce of the Ocean Isle Beach Sea Turtle Protection Organization says the first loggerhead turtle nest was found on Mother’s Day, which he says is about two to three weeks early.
A nest on Figure Eight Island was found on May 12, which is considered well ahead of schedule.
Sea turtle nesting season begins on May 1, though local volunteers said they usually don’t see nests until the end of May or the beginning of June. However, Boyce suggested that unusually warm water temperatures in the wake of a mild winter may have hastened the nesting.
