STORMTRACK 3: Tropical Storm Alberto weakening, will have little impact on SE NC

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Hurricane Season is off to an early start as Tropical Storm Alberto formed off the South Carolina coast nearly two weeks before the official June first start date. The system started as a small disturbance, but has spun into the first tropical system of the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

As of Sunday night, TS Alberto has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph. The system is traveling south along the East Coast at five mph. It is expected to begin turning north and will be closest to the North Carolina coast Monday night into Tuesday. However, Alberto’s track has shifted to the east, and with it being farther offshore, the impacts here in our area will likely be minimal.

No Tropical Storm Watches/Warnings are currently in effect for our area.

TS Alberto jumped the gun by about two weeks. Alberto is the earliest-forming tropical storm in the Atlantic basin since Ana in 2003. This is also the first time that a tropical storm has formed before the official start of the Hurricane Season in both the Atlantic and East Pacific basins.

Stick with WWAY for all the latest on our early start to Hurricane Season, and check out Hurricanes 101 for all the details.
